Last night the Bruins lost in overtime to the Washington Capitals, eliminating themselves from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Washington Capitals’ forward Joel Ward snapped in a rebound shot past Tim Thomas providing his team with a victory. A simple play made by hundreds of men every night on the ice. What’s the difference this time? Apparently the color of his skin.
According to a bunch of ignorant Bruins fans Ward is in the wrong sport, some stating he should be playing basketball and get off the ice, while others state that Thomas is a disgrace letting a ‘colored person’ score on him.
I’m sorry but a hockey player is a hockey player, regardless of the color of his skin. By saying that he isn’t a hockey player is like saying he isn’t a real person which is complete assonance.
Fellow Bruins fans, I can understand being upset that the defending Cup champs have just been eliminated and that you are angry and disappointed. However, there is NO NEED to go around slandering Ward because of the color of his skin. There is absolutely no need for it. The color of his skin has nothing to do with his talent which he clearly demonstrated that he has last night, otherwise this discussion wouldn’t be happening.
The Bruins Organization has also expressed their disappointment in those of you that have had something to say, in stating:
“The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.”(via Bruins Official Site)
Also on the record, in no way do Ariana, myself or A Cup A Bruin and the Aerys NHL ladies condone this type of behavior from ANY of the fan bases or share even remotely the same views. A hockey player is a hockey player regardless of their nationality, race or sexual preference. That is what makes this sport so phenomenal, that anyone from any country can come over and play it. It showcases talent from all over the world not just in our own country.
Bruins fans, it is time you swallow your pride and accept the fact that the Washington Capitals wanted the win last night more than the Bruins. It’s as simple as that. The Capitals were more determined and produced what the Bruins couldn’t, a win. It is NOT the end of the world, there will always be next season and the season after that and many more to come. Stay classy Bruins fans and quite being ignorant fools.
