On this day in history two very important births occurred, myself and Brad Marchand(of course mine is the more important of the two). Seriously though, how awesome is it that I can say I share my birthday with Brad Marchand?! Now, if only I could party with him for my twenty-first. That would be amazing. Okay, in all seriousness, twenty-four years ago today Brad Marchand came into this world in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He played minor hockey for the AAA midgets in Halifax and was a 2nd round pick in the 2004 QMJHL Midget Draft. He played for four seasons in the QMJHL with the Moncton Wildcats, Val-d’Or Foreurs and Halifax Mooseheads. During his junior year he was selected 71st overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Bruins.
While he was drafted in 2006, he didn’t make his debut with them until October of 2009 against the Nashville Predators. His first goal was scored on November 3, 2010 against the Buffalo Sabres’ Jhonas Enroth. Since joining the Bruins he has posted 49 goals and 48 assists for 97 points in just 173 games. He was also a member of the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship teams for Team Canada.
Marchand has a reputation of being a ‘brat’ on the ice, instigating other players and getting under their skin to wind them up, sometimes resulting in a power play advantage for the Bruins. Through most of the 2011 playoffs, he was a key asset to the team for his ability to draw penalties, adopting the nickname “Nose-Faced Killah,” after the Ghost Face Killah. He has also been known as “Marshmont” after a television announcer pronounced his name wrong and the team calls him the “Honey Badger.” There is also the President Obama’s nickname he adopted being the “Little Ball of Hate.”
While he may be known as a brat on the ice, off the ice he is known as a funny, comical and generous human being. One who is also among the Top 25 Most Stylish Bostonians for 2011(Who isn’t stylish with their shirt off sporting nice abs?). However, since today is his birthday, we can expect to see the more wild and crazy Brad come out, the one who had to skip the Stanley Cup DVD interviewing because he was too inebriated. Happy Birthday Brad, try not to party too hard, Seguin might get jealous.
