May 25th last year was a game 6 lost against the Tampa Bay Lightning pushing the series to a game 7. This year’s May 25th unfortunately has no playoff games in sight for the B’s but that doesn’t mean there can’t be a celebration right?

This Wednesday The SportsBusiness Journal held their 5th annual 2012 Sports Business Awards in NYC to celebrate excellence in sports business. It was there that the Boston Bruins were awarded Sports Team of the Year.

The team was acknowledged for their 2011 Stanley Cup Championship title, as well as their involvement in the Greater Boston community with all the charitable work the team does. Obviously I love the B’s but their winning of this award really doesn’t come as a surprise to me. The Bruins brand itself increased so much after winning the cup and with the 2012 launch of my personal favorite “Digital Entertainment Network” (DEN), the team is able to deliver more content to fans than ever before.

Off the ice, the B’s do so much for the community. Last year I went to Milan Lucic’s Rock n’ Jock charity softball game which featured B’s players of past and present and local faces of news in Boston competing in a charity game. Not only is a great way for fans to meet players but it gives back to the community.

Besides that, the team holds Military appreciation nights and hold many charitable events that give back to the  Boston Bruins Foundation. The Foundation reached record heights in fundraising in 2012 and donated $1.6 million to various charities through grants and in-game fundraising.

Reasons like this make me even prouder to be a Boston Bruins fan.
