Yesterday the Boston Bruins signed defenseman Matt Bartkowsi to a one year two-way contract, keeping him through the 2012-2013 season. By signing Matt, the Bruins are sending the message that they are in fact keeping their former teams(Providence and Boston) in tact and keeping their defensive depth. Bartkowski started last season with the Bruins while Adam McQuaid was sidelined with an injury, then finished his season with the Providence Bruins in the AHL.He finished the season with 22 points and 38 penalty minutes, walking a fine line between AHL prospect and NHL defenseman. He has also registered four major league penalty minutes as well with the Black and Gold.
Throughout camp he has shown improvements in quick, first passes and looking for plays in the offensive zone. Yet, when he gets into the actual NHL atmosphere, it seems as if he is lost and can’t quite keep the tempo.
This season, with Joe Corvo being gone, there is an open 7th-defenseman roster spot available. Granted, the majority of Bruins fans are expecting 19 year old Dougie Hamilton to make the leap, but Matt throws some stiff competition. This year’s pre-season should prove to be an interesting one as a great handful of young men fight for the opportunity to wear the Black and Gold sweater.
